Historical overview of Pegões:
The territory belonging to Pegões was detached from the Parish of Canha, the county seat, until 1838, and was part, since 1186, of the domains of the Order of Santiago .
Pegões, particularly Pegões-Cruzamento, was, since ancient times, a place for travelers and goods to pass between Lisbon and Alentejo, and even Spain, through do Montijo.
The Roman road passed through here, partly used for the construction, in the Middle Ages, of what would come to be known as Estrada Real, which connected Aldeia Galega to Vendas Novas, replaced by the current EN 4, but maintaining the route between the so-called Pegões Velhos (today the town of Sto. Isidro de Pegões) and the Pegões intersection.
Through the Estrada Real, crossing Pegões-Cruzamento, The so-called Mala-posta was the first regular passenger and cargo transport service, in addition to mail, between Montijo and Badajoz, established in 1533, which remained in operation until the inauguration of the Leste railway line (between Barreiro and the border Spanish, passing through Vendas Novas), verified in 1863.
From that date onwards, having installed what was the Pegões-Gare stop, Pegões progressively assumed an important role in the flow of agricultural products and passenger transport, between Lisbon and Alentejo.
Similar to what happened with other crossing points, along the railway line, the development pole, traditionally associated with locations crossed by highways, is diverted to the places served by the railway line, assuming their own toponymy: in this case, Pegões-Gare in contrast to Pegões Velhos.
In addition to the connection with the railway, there is the fact that this parish, namely its headquarters, Pegões-Cruzamento, is the point of intersection between the EN4 and EN10, so that all favorable conditions are created for the development of merchandise exchange and the implementation of industrial units, which can be seen in the our days.
Law no. 94/85, of October 4th (Diário da República, I Série, no. 229, of October 4th, 1985) created the Parish of Pegões, having been approved in the plenary session of the Assembly of the Republic of July 11th, 1985, after a favorable opinion from the Municipal Council of Montijo on May 23,1979.
With Law no. 11-A/2013 of January 28, the parish of Pegões was added to the parish of Santo Isidro de Pegões.
